'Game Skills | Digital Futures' is a six-week, part time Skills Bootcamp for people who enjoy playing games and want to explore how their skills could lead to work in the games or wider digital industries.

Games are about creativity, problem-solving and collaboration; all valuable skills in tech, digital marketing, design and more This course, developed with top UK games studios, gives you a first look at game design, development and production. You'll also get a taste of what working in the industry feels like. 

This course is fully funded by the UK government and completely free if you're applying on your own (not through an employer)

Course Outline

Week 1&2
Inside the Games World
An introduction into the Video Games Industry, covering types of companies, key commercial relationships and the basics of developing and delivering a game from scratch. We'll give you an AI-driven assessment of your game skills and an understanding of the power of your in-game skills out of game.
Week 3&4
Breaking Games, Building Skills
An introduction to Quality Assurance, including principles of quality testing, bug tracking and reporting. We’ll introduce you to marketing in the games industry, other creative and digital industries and some basics in business management.
Week 5&6
Level Up Your Career
How to make yourself stand out in the games and digital marketplace, create a top-class portfolio, CV and profile on LinkedIn. You’ll create and make presentations in response to briefs set by some of the country’s leading, up and coming games studios and hear from professionals in the tech and other industries where game-based skills are in demand - from cybersecurity and digital marketing to the public services and creative tech.

Course Timetable Overview

Core Bootcamp Sessions
Two evenings per week, 18:00 - 20:00
Live, online workshops led by professionals from the games and other digital industries, focused on exploring games, job roles and featuring essential career development topics.
Technical Skills Session
Twilight, 20:00 - 22:00
Monday - Thursday
Optional open learning time hosted on Discord, offering you the chance to learn technical skills in software, workplace and productivity technology.
Studio Work Experience Projects
Saturdays, 11:00 - 17:00
Collaborative, hands-on projects where you will work in teams to complete tasks set by games studios and other digital industry companies, have the chance to develop your work-ready talent and put to work some of the skills you’ve acquired from the course.

 

ELIGIBILITY

  • Age Requirement: Must be aged 19 years or over.
  • Location: All learners must live in Nottinghamshire or Derbyshire.
  • Employment Status: Open to unemployed and self-employed individuals, those employed with support of their employer (employer contribution required), and those employed without support from their current employer (no employer contribution required).
  • Funding: The Bootcamp is funded by the UK Government, part of the Skills for Life programme.
 

PROGRAMME OUTCOMES

  • Self-employed participants will gain the skills they need to explore and seize new opportunities to grow their business.
  • Employed participants (with employer support) can expect either a new role or expanded responsibilities in their current role where their newly acquired skills will be put to use
  • Employed participants (without employer support) are guaranteed an interview with an employer that is looking to recruit for a role where their new skills are required.
  • Unemployed participants are also guaranteed an interview with a potential employer where their newly developed skills will be used.

  • Do I need any experience? - No, the course is designed for beginners.
  • Do I need a gaming PC or special software? - No, you just need a basic laptop or computer. We'll provide access to everything else. 
  • Is the course really free? - Yes, it is fully funded by the department for Education, so there is no cost to you. 
  • How much time do I need to commit? - It runs part time online over 6 weeks.
